            Crude materials such as petroleum, middle oils, or synthetic hydrocarbons are aromatized in the liquid or vaporous state in the presence of catalysts, such as silicates or alumina, capable of being impregnated with metal oxides at about 450º-650º.  The reaction products, particularly the middle fractions, are sulfonated and neutralized.  Detergents are obtained.
