Catalytic Ni-containing materials for hydrogenating and dehydrogenating reactions and especially for the synthesis of CH₂O from CO and H₂ are produced by converting pure Ni or Ni hydrate into basic Ni nitrate by the action of HNO₃ at a temperature below 40º, converting the nitrate into Ni hydrate, reducing the Ni hydrate to Ni and incorporating into the latter 1 or more of the activators Co, Cu, Ag, Zn, Pb, Mn, Mg, Fe, or Si.
