            A Ni catalyst on a metal support is used in presence of a promoter (1-5% of Ag, V, Co, Cd, or Cu), preferably at 180º-225º, the lower temperature being employed for mixtures rich in H2.  For purification the gas mixture may be passed successively over Fe, Cu, Ni, and metalized (Cu) porous C.  The catalyst may be regenerated at intervals by a reverse current of N2 or steam, or steam may be added to the gas mixture.  The metal support is preferably Ni, Cr, or Al.
