A process for depositing catalytic metals, such as Ni, on metallic supports, such as Ni, Fe or Cr, comprises heating the supports to >100º and leading a gaseous organometallic compound, such as Ni(CO)₄, over the heated supports so as to cause decomposition of the organometallic compound at the surface of the heated supports and precipitation of metal from the compound upon the supports.
