      640.  ------.  [FARENHOLTZ, W. A., HUBBE, G., AND HUBBE, H.]  Oxidizing Hydrocarbons.  British Patent 506,104, May 23, 1939.  Chem. Abs., 33, 1939, p. 9321.

Fatty acids, alcohols, etc. are produced by oxidizing hydrocarbons of high molecular weight and gaseous oxidizing agents in more than 1 reaction vessel, a current of oxidizing gas being passed through the vessels in succession and additional oxidizing gas being introduced into 1 or more of the vessels disposed in succession in relation to the flow of the gas.  The material to be oxidized may be passed through the reaction vessels in the same direction as the current of gas by at a slower rate than the latter.  If aliphatic alcohols are to be produced, the reaction medium is kept strongly acid.  Gives examples of the oxidation of paraffin with the use of Mn stearate, Mg stearate, and afatty acid as catalyst.

See also French Patent 837,524 (abs. 3808).
