In the later stages of the process described in British Patent 146,110 (abs. 634), that is, after a high concentration of CH₄ has been attained, CO₂ in an amount corresponding to about ¼ of the H₂ remaining is added instead of further addition of CO: the H₂O vapor is removed after each passage as before. In an example, the first set of furnaces taking CO and H₂ is heated to 290º and the furnaces through which the gases are passed subsequent to addition of CO₂ are heated to 390º. Excess of CO₂ may be removed from the gases by absorption by lime, etc. and the residue of H₂ by heated CuO.
