      631.  FABRIQUE NATIONALE DE PRODUCTS CHIMIQUES ET D’EXPLOSIFS SOC. ANON.  Distilling Solid Carbonaceous Materials.  British Patent 296,443, Sept. 2, 1927.  Chem. Abs., vol. 23, 1929. p. 2555.

Before carbonizing coal, lignite, peat, or oil shale, oxidizing agents, such as oxides of Fe or Mn or carbonates of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, are added to the charge.  The yield of tar is increased, and a porous coke is obtained, which contains metal oxides or finely divided metals and may be used as a catalyst in synthetic processes such as production of condensable hydrocarbons and alcohols from CO, H2, and gaseous hydrocarbons produced in the distillation.  Pulverulent Fe ore, residues of roasted pyrites, or Mn or may be added and the residue together with the associated coke transferred to a reducing apparatus.

            FALDINI, M.  See abs. 2524.
