      624.  ENTERPRISE GÉNÉRALE DE CHAUFFAGE INDUSTRIEL PILLARD FRÈRES & CIE.  Gasification of Solid of Liquid Fuels.  British Patent 688,915, Mat. 18, 1953. Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 8349.

Describes method and apparatus for gasification of liquid or finely pulverized combustible material such as lignite fines or other pulverized solid or liquid fuels to give gas containing a high percentage of CH4.  Combustibles, free O2, and steam are injected by tangential nozzles into in tubular furnace where primary gasification takes place at 1,100º and approximately 20 atm.  This gas then enters a conical section of the furnace where additional steam is introduced, and a water-gas shift reaction takes place at 600º-700º.  The gas then enters a widened 3d section where it is cooled to 300º by secondary steam, which flows through pipes around this section.  Formation of CH4 by hydrogenation of CO occurs in this section and is aided by high pressures and low temperatures.  The gas produced contains 60-70% CH4 and H2 on a CO2-free gas basis.
