In effecting catalytic reaction of H₂ with C oxides, substantially pure H₂ is first circulated over a catalyst such as oxides of Zn and Cr. Then a mixture of H₂ and C oxides is added to the circulating gas in proportions required to produce MeOH and effect continuance of the reaction under suitable pressure.
