            Process for the synthesis of motor fuel hydrocarbons by the interaction of CO and H2 in presence of an Fe group catalyst may be improved by separating from the synthesis products a hydrocarbon fraction b. 100º-400º F. containing oxygenated compounds produced by the reaction and passing it in the vapor phase in admixture with 5-50 wt. % of stream into contact with fuller’s earth or the like at 700º-900º F. and 15-25 p. s. i. g. for a sufficient time to substantially improve the octane value, usually to about 12 octane numbers.
