       556.  ------.  [DREYFUS, H.]  Oxygenated Organic Compounds From Methane and Steam.  British Patent 337,410, July 24, 1929.  Chem. Abs., vol. 25, 1931, p. 2152.

            Compounds such as EtOH, HOAc, AcH, and their homologs and ketones are formed from CH4 and steam at 200º-500º and pressures up to 500 atm. or more, and the products may be varied by adding to the reaction mixture C oxides, H2 or O2 and inert gases such as N2 also may be present.  Among the catalysts that may be used are Zn, Mg, Ca, Al, Cr, Mn, V, Mo, Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, and rare earths, or their compounds, such as oxides.  As or S compounds, phosphates, silicates, or borates.  Also these may be used mixed with alkali or alkaline earth compounds, with each other, with Cu, Ag or Au, with compounds such as Zn vanadates, Zn chromate, Mu chromate, Zn tungstate or molybdate, or with the corresponding salts or Mg, Ca, or Al.  Apparatus of Cu or lined with Cu or of steel containing V, Mn, Ni, or Co is suitable.
