            Organic O compounds are prepared by the reaction of steam with aliphatic hydrocarbons such as CH4, C2H6, C2H4, or C2H2.  Alkaline earth metals or metals of groups 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, Al, Mg, or Zn or their compounds may be used as catalysts.  The reaction is carried out under pressure and preferably at 250º-500º.  Examples are given of the preparation of MeOH and higher alcohols along with aldehydes, acids, and ketones.
