      545.  ------.  [DREYFUS, H.]  [Methanol Synthesis.]  French Patent 653,554, Apr. 28, 1928.  Chem. Abs., vol. 23, 1929, p. 3716.

Catalysts for the synthesis of MeOH are prepared by precipitating ZnCO3 in a gelatinous form, washing by decantation and drying the product under reduced pressure so as to retain the colloidal state, and heating the gel to a temperature not > that to be used in the synthesis, for example, 400º.  The ZnCO3 gel may be produced by precipitation in a very dilute solution, or by incorporating during or after precipitation with a protective colloid such as starch, pectin, sapenin, or hydrated SiO2.  The catalyst may be used in conjunction with a promoter such as 5-10% of Cr2O3 or other catalyst.
