      540.  ------.  [DREYFUS, H.]  Methanol.  British Patent 262,494, June 13, 1925.  Chem. Abs., vol. 21, 1927, p. 3626.

Water gas or other suitable gas mixture containing CO and H2 in equimolecular proportions is passed at high temperature and pressure over ZnO without addition of other MeOH-forming catalysts.  A pressure of 50-150 atm. is preferred and a temperature or 200º-300º, but the pressure and temperature may rise as high as 200 atm. and 450º.  A Cu-lined or Al apparatus is preferably used.  If the gases are passed through the apparatus at too low a speed, hydrocarbons and higher alcohols predominate in the product.
