      529.   ------.  [DREYFUS, H.]  Formaldehyde: Methyl Alcohol. British Patent 108,855, July 23, 1917.  Chem. Abs., vol. 12, 1918, p. 155.

HCHO and MeOH, or mixtures thereof, are obtained by the reaction of H2 on CO or CO2 in the presence or absence of catalysts.  Suitable catalysts are Pt, platinized asbestos, Cu, Fe, Cr, Ni, Ce, U, V, or their oxides, etc.  The process is carried out by passing the mixture of gases through reaction vessels or tubes at 100º-400º and condensing the products.  The mixture of gases is preferably preheated.  The process may be effected in contact apparatus similar to that used in the manufacture of SO2 or, when catalysts are not used, in metal or other apparatus containing glass scrap, glass wool, etc. to provide an extensive surface.
