            MeOH and CO are heated together under substantially atmospheric pressure to 100°-500° (generally 200°-350°) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal the acetate of which decomposes with formation of HOAc at temperatures such as are employed.  Catalysts may be oxides, acetates, methylates, or other suitable compounds of Cu, Sn, Pb, Zn or finely divided metals such as Zn, Al, or Cu.
