The hydrocarbons are cracked to low-boiling olefins, which are suitable for polymerizing to yield antiknock gasoline.  Acid-activated bleaching earth is used as catalyst, which is saturated with a H3BO3-H3PO4 mixture or only with H3PO4 and is activated with Co salts or similar salts.  During the cracking the hydrocarbons are kept at a partial pressure of 1/10-1/40 kg. per cm.2.
