In a continuous process, solid pulverized carbonaceous material is charged to a stage of reaction with steam suitably heated to a temperature that effects the formation of a hot gas containing CO and H2, and the hot gas is passed into contact with a Ni catalyzer so that CH4 is formed from CO and H2.  Describes apparatus, and the temperature of the gas entering the catalyzer is automatically controlled.
