      447.            CROMEANS, J. S.  (Phillips Petroleum Co.).  Formation of Acetals to Separate Oxygenated Compounds From Fischer-Tropsch Products.  United States Patent Appl. 43,202, filed Aug. 9, 1948 (Cl. 260-450).  Official Gaz., vol. 652. Nov. 20, 1951, p. 891; Chem. Abs., vol. 47. 1953, p. 1728.

Narrow-boiling aldehyde-alcohol-ketone fraction, obtained from the aqueous layer of the product of the catalytic hydrogenation of CO, particularly a propionaldehyde-acetone-methanol fraction b. 45º-58º, is resolved by forming an acetal from a constituent alcohol and aldehyde, separating the ketone from the resulting acetal-containing mixture by ordinary fractionation methods, hydrolyzing the residual acetal to regenerate the original alcohol and aldehyde, and recovering the regenerated alcohol and aldehyde by ordinary fractionation.
