Alkyl aryl sulfonates useful as deterants or wetting or emulsifying agents are produced from olefinic materials from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.  The fraction boiling 300º-600º F., is passed through a silica gel column at a temperature below cracking.  The fraction of the percolate that has flowed from the adsorbent mass, when the bromine number of the effluent percolate is at its maximum value, is separated.  A mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbon is alkylated with at least a portion of the segregated fraction.  6 literature refs. and 7 United States patents cited.
