Gases containing C oxides and H2, produced by treating solid fuels in a producer with air and steam, to which hydrocarbons such as CH4 and C2H2 may be added, are treated at 80º and at about atmospheric pressure with a catalyst formed mainly of the sulfates of Ce and Co. details of the preparation of which are given.  The product comprises about 90% hydrocarbons and the remainder is chiefly ketones: it may be used as liquid fuel or as a solvent for fatty materials, rubber, cellulose, acetate, or other substances.
