      418.            COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ÉLECTROMETALLURIGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES ET CAMARGUE.  Antiknock Fuel.  British Patent 542,836, Jan. 29, 1942.  Chem. Abs., vol. 36, 1942, p. 4318.

CO is hydrogenated under pressures higher than 10 atm. using catalysts of the type having oxides and suboxides not reducible under the working conditions.  Hydrocarbons and higher alcohols having branched chains are obtained.  The speed of passage of the gases and the temperature are so regulated that the products condensed on leaving the catalyst separate into 2 layers: the proportion of MeOH formed is very low.  The light-weight layer is separated by distillation into 2 fraction.  The fraction b. below 115º is treated on Al2O2 at a temperature of about 420º in a tube lined internally with Cu.  Isoolefins and olefins are obtained.  The 2d fraction, which distills above 115º, is treated at a temperature of about 400º in the presence of H2 and under a total pressure of 150 atms. On a catalyst constituted by Mo oxide deposited on activated C.
