Mixture of H₂, N₂ and CO, which is suitable after further treatment for the synthesis of NH₃, is produced from the residual gases obtained after H₂ has been separated from coke-oven gas by subjecting these residual gases, in admixture with air, to a flameless incomplete combustion in a tower filled with refractory material kept at a high temperature. Traces of unsaturated hydrocarbons such as those of the C₂H₂ series, detrimental to catalyst used for NH₃ synthesis, are removed by catalytic destruction in the presence of Fe, Ni, Cr or an alloy of these 3 metals. Describes various other details of procedure and of apparatus.
