Catalyst for the preparation of MeOH from H2 and oxides of C comprises 1 or more difficulty reducible metallic oxides, such as the oxides of Zn, Mg, Cd, Cr, V, W, with 1 or more easily reducible metallic oxides such as the oxides of Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, and a metallic halide such as ZnCl2, MgCl3, CrCl3, MgBr2, ZnBr2.  The oxides difficult to reduce are preferably predominant.
