      386.     ------.  [CLARK, A.]  (Phillips Petroleum Co.).  Synthesis of Hydrocarbons.  United States Patent 2,450,500.  Oct. 5, 1948: appl. filed Sept. 5, 1945, Serial No. 614,578: 7 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).  Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949. p. 839.

Synthesis gas H2:CO=3:2 at a pressure of 200 p. s. i. is preheated to 180º C., then made to flow downward through tubes, 3 in. inside diameter, 10 ft. long, connected in parallel.  Each tube is packed with 3 different layers of catalyst.  The progressive order upward is sintered Fe, 4 ft:Fe, 3 ft,:Co-Th, 3 ft.  The space velocity is maintained at 150 vol. Per vol. of catalyst per hr.  The reactants and products become hotter as they flow downward.  The temperature at the Co-Th and Fe junction is 205º C. and at the Fe-sintered Fe junction 260º C.  The effluent gas is 320º C.  A liquid mineral seal oil flows upward outside of the tubes countercurrent to the gas flow.  The rate of flow is adjusted to maintain the catalyst junction temperatures.  70% conversion takes place representing a light hydrocarbon fraction, 86 wt. %, heavier fraction, 14 wt. %.  Various combinations of catalysts may be used.  1 literature ref. And 3 United States patents cited.
