In the production of lubricating oils by catalytically hydrogenating CO, cracking the nongaseous hydrocarbons thus obtained, and converting the cracking products into lubricating oils with use of a polymerizing agent comprising AlCl₃, the oil is heated in the presence of the polymerizing agent to about 140°-240° C. without additions of halogenated hydrocarbons.
