      371.     C. I. B. A., Ltd.  (formerly Société pour I’ndustrie chimique á Bàle.)  [Catalytic Hydrogenation of Carbon Monoxide to Hydrocarbons.]  Swiss Patent 273,952.  June 1, 1951 (Cl. 360).  Chem. Abs., vol. 46, 1952, p. 710.

Catalysts containing SiO2 8-15; MgO 15-25 per 100 parts of total Co gave improved conversion to higher hydrocarbons and smaller amounts of CH4, Na2CO3 solution, 140 gm. Per 1.5 1., was added to 1.5 1. boiling Co. salt solution containing 42.4 gm. Co per 1., the precipitate was washed, stirred with 20 cc. Water glass, filtered and washed, stirred with a paste made from 14 gm. Calcined MgO, filtered dried, and hydrogenated 2 hr. 400º to give 74 gm catalyst with 233 gm. Per 1. total Co content, 38% metallic Co.  The hydrocarbons obtained at atmospheric pressure from CO 39.  H2 59, inert gases 2% were 15.2% C3-4, 9.8 paraffin and heavy oil, and 45 benzine (C3-12).  The benzine contained olefin in the C5-8 fraction 55-70, and in the C8-12 fraction 40-50%.
