      351.            CENTR DẺTUDES ET DE RECHERCHES TECHNIQUES DU PẺTROLE, DES CARBURANTS ET DES LUBRIFIANTS, AND BADISHE ANALIN- UNED SODA-FABRIK (I. G. Farbenindustrie  A. G. “In Anflösung”).  [Cracking of Hydrocarbons.]  French Patent 976,166.  Mar. 14, 1951.  Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 24755.

Aliphatic hydrocarbons containing >5 C atoms in the molecule are passed at >450º over a catalyst consisting of an active AL2O3 prepared by precipitation from an aluminate with acid and peptizing the precipitate by HNO3, or by precipitation by alkali from an Al salt at >80º.  The product of cracking is a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons, C2H4, C2H6 and coke.  As alphatic compounds petroleum products obtained by hydrogenation or cracking of mineral oils or by reaction of CO and H may be used.  The catalyst may be supported in SiO2 gel or an Al silicate.  The aliphatic vapors are passed at a rate of 0.1-2 1. per hr. per 1. of catalyst.  The products may be separated by a selective solvent, for example, SO2 alone or mixed with propane, phenol, a ketonic acid, or furfuryl alcohol, while unconverted hydrocarbons may be recycled.
