Mixture of CO and steam is passed over a catalyst that comprises and acid salt of acidic oxides such as primary and secondary phosphates of Zn, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Ce, or Th, and the acid salts formed between these metals and the oxides of W and Mo.  Inert gases, such as N2 or CO2, may be included with the reactants to control the temperature.  The reaction is conducted at a pressure of 25-900 atm. and a temperature of 200º-300º.
