Alcohols produced by the oxo reaction are purified from S impurities and are aerated with air while being simultaneously washed with a 10-50 wt. % NaOH solution, the volume of aqueous caustic being in the range of 0.5-50 vol. % based on the alcohol being treated.  The treatment is carried out at temperatures of 30º-100º for 1-24 hr.  The mixture stratifies into a lower aqueous layer containing the S impurities and an upper alcohol layer, which are separated.
