      297. ------.  [CAIN, V. L., AND HEMMINGER, C. E.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  United States Patent 2,589,925, Mar. 18, 1952; appl. Filed May 9, 1947, Serial No. 747,112; 3 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).

Fluidized bed of active powdered Fe catalyst having a total O content of about 5-10% is first treated with a CO-rich gas, in which the partial pressure of CO is about 25-75 p. s. i. abs. At 300°-400°, long enough to convert the Fe powder to Fe carbide containing 1.0-3.5 wt. % of carbide C, mostly in the form of Fe2C.  The catalyst is then contacted with synthesis gas at reaction zone temperatures of 550°-700° F. and a H2 partial pressure of 170 p. s. i., whereby the carbide C content of the catalyst in the reaction zone is maintained during the desired synthesis reaction, and effluent vapors containing normally liquid hydrocarbons are recovered.
