      258.     ------.  BROWN, R. L.  (Solvay Process Co.).  Metahnol.  United States Patent 2,281,228, Apr. 28, 1942; appl. filed Mar. 3, 1939, Serial No. 259,622; 10 claims (Cl. 260-449).  Chem. Abs., vol. 36, 1942, p. 5483.

In a cyclic system for the catalytic synthesis of MeOH and H2 and CO under high pressure, the gas, after contact with the catalyst, is treated to remove MeOH, and the residual gas from which the MeOH has been removed is recirculated into contact with the catalyst, with an equilibrium concentration of CO2.  The catalyst used is free from oxides and salts of the alkali and alkaline earth metals at a temperature of 300º-340º and at a space velocity of 10,000-20,000, and CO2 is removed from the circulating gas so that the gas brought into contact with the catalyst contains materially less than the equilibrium concentration, thus preventing the substantial decrease in catalytic activity of the catalyst, which results when the gas introduced into contact with it contains the equilibrium concentration of CO2.  Describes arrangement of apparatus.
