Active hydrogenation catalysts are prepared by treating a kieselguhr-supported Cu or Ni compound, which is reducible to the metal with H2 while the compound is suspended in a liquid medium such as organic polysiloxane.  The reduction may be a preliminary step or the material to be hydrogenated may be present.  2 United States patents cited.
