      165.            BEDFORD, F., AND WILLIAMS, C. E.  (Cedford Gas Process Co.).  Catalytic Synthesis of Methane.  United States Patent 983,199.  Jan. 31, 1911: appl. filed Feb. 25, 1910.  Serial No. 546,016.  Chem. Abs., vol. 5, 1911. p. 1184.

Catalytic synthesis of CH4 form a commercial gas containing H2 and CO, comprising cooling the gas to about-190° to -180° to separate out in the solid form impurities having little or no vapor tension in such manner that the H2 retains the requisite amount of CO, passing the mixture into contact with a heated catalytic excess of N2, and separating the CH4.  The gas used id subjected to a preliminary treatment, as with Na2CO3 solution, to remove the CO2.  The cooling may be sufficient to condense substantially all the CO, which is then distilled and if desired may be further purified and separated from N2 by absorption in Cu2Cl2 solution and distillation.
