Substances such as brown-coal tar, crude paraffin, coal-or tar-hydrogenation product, and others are freed of whole or most of their oily components with, for example, nitrobenzene.  Then they are oxidized with HNO3 or with nitrous gases.  The oxidation products are finished in the usual way.
