Acetals of NCCH2CH2CHO prepared by the reductive carbonylation of CH2: CHCN (I) in the presence of saturated alcohols or glycols, are useful intermediates in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and pesticide.  MeOH 120, (I) 75, tert-butylcatechil 1. reduced Co-thoria catalyst 10, H2 230 atm., and CO 170 atm., shaken 1 hr. at 150° and 600-900 atm., CO pressure in a Ag-lined autoclave gave 59 gm. y,y-dimethoxybutyronitrile, b24 90°-91°.  (CH2OH)2 110 gm gave 12 gm. 2-(2-cyanoethyl) dioxolane, b6 71°-75°, n 21/D 1,4248.  Derivatives of these compounds may be used in or as lubricating oils or as additives.
