      144.     ------.  [BARR, F. T.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.). [Water Gas.]  French Patent 970,040, Dec. 28, 1958: appl. filed Aug. 5, 1948.  Chem. Zentralb., I, 1951, p. 1963.

Finely divided fuels, such as coal, coke, shale, etc., are gasified in a fluidized bed with superheated steam.  The gases in the carbonaceous residues are blown out with CO and passed to the gasifier.  The residues are passed first into a combustion chamber in which they are heated by circulating O2-containing gases and then into the gasification chamber.  Gases of high heating value and synthesis gases with CO: H2 in the ratio of 1: 0.5-5% are obtained.
