      141.     ------.  [BARR, F. T.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Production of Sulfur-Free Water Gas.  United States Patent 2,614,038.  Oct. 14, 1952; appl. filed Dec. 28, 1945, Serial No. 637,615: 8 claims (Cl. 48-204).

Solid carbonaceous material is gasified at 1.400°-2,400° F. in admixture with 0.2-1% by weight, of catalyst useful in promoting cracking of organic S compounds.  Re-formation of S compounds is prevented by rapid quenching of the gaseous products to 400°-600° F.  Catalysts with suitable cracking activity include Ni, Cu, Ag, Au, Ca, Mg, Ti, Zn thiomolybdates, natural minerals, ores, earth or clays containing oxides or hydrated oxides of Fe, Al, or Si.  Bauxite, either alone or in combination with Fe oxides, caustic alkalies, or alkaline earth, is particularly good.  3 literature refs., 1 foreign patent, and 5 United States patents cited.
