138. -----. (Standard Oil Development Co.) Method for Gasifying Solid Fuels. United States Patent 2,622,973, Dec. 23, 1952; appl. filed Oct. 2, 1945, Serial No. 619,874; 9 claims (Cl. 48-206).

Solid carbonaceous material is converted to volatile fuels, synthesis gas, or water gas with heat generated by partial combustion of the carbonaceous material in a fluidized bed.  The conversion takes place in at least 2 zones at 1,600º -2500º F.  Heat is supplied by circulating particles highly heated by heat generated by the combustion.  Extraneous solid particles of incombustible material are added to maintain a concentration of C in the conversion zone at 0.1% - 1% of the fluidized solids.  The extraneous material may be catalytic, capable on increasing oxidation reaction rates.  1 literature ref., 1 foreign patent, and 10 United States patents cited.
