Promoters are added to the Fe, Ni, or Co used as the catalytic agent.  These substances are generally compounds of Mg, Be, Al, or of the alkali, alkaline earth, or rare earth metals, or of Zr, Va, Ta, Cr, Mn, Mo, or W.  Addition of the oxide or other compound of Mg or Al is particularly favorable.  Details specified.
