MeOH and other O-containing organic compounds are prepared by the catalytic reduction of C oxides (preferably CO) with a mixture of oxides of metals of different groups as catalyst, such as ZnO with an oxide of Cr, U, V, or W: Mg and Mo oxides: Ce and Mn oxides, or Cd and Cr oxides.  A Cu apparatus is used, and the catalysts should be free from Fe, Ni, and Co.
