Gaseous mixtures containing CO and H2 with essentially no hydrocarbon are made in runoff gas producers operated in coke.  Finely divided gaseous liquid or solid carbonaceous materials are introduced through a burner with a gasifying agent containing O2 and into a fuel bed of the gas producer.  The O2 content of the introduced gases is maintained at a level to hold temperature of 1,300°-1,800° in the fuel bed.
