In catalytic reactions involving oxidation, reduction, hydrogenation, or dehydrogenation, especially synthesis of MeOH from CO and H2 using as catalyst ZnO or a mixture of Zn and Cr oxides, the oxides or hydroxides used as catalysts are prepared by electrolysis of corresponding metal salts, such as the nitrates or formats.  Describes numerous details off procedure.
