      34.    ------.  [ARNOLD, J. C.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.). Contacting Finely Divided Solids With Gases.  British Patent 636,401, 1950.  Fuel abs., vol S. No. 1, 1950, abs. 380.

Process for synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 in which finely divided solids are maintained in a fluidized state in a treating zone by an upflowing suspending gas and in which the buoyancy of the solids progressively changes within the treating zone, wherein there is maintained, in all or part of the zone, solid nonfluidized packing relatively larger than the finely divided solids and defining a plurality of passageways for the passage therethrough of the gas and suspended solids, finely divided solids, which have undergone a change of buoyancy within the treating zone being withdrawn therefrom treated to restore at least partly their original buoyancy, and returned to the heating zone.
