Permanent gases are now used for heating.  This is uneconomical owing to the low heating value, 2,000-3,000 cal. per m.3, and high CO2 content, 50%.  By passing the gases and steam over Ni catalysts at 800°, CH4+CO2 or H2O giving CO and H2, and 500°, CO+H2O=CO2+H2, a gas is obtained, which, after cooling and removal of CO2, can be used directly for MeOH synthesis.
