Processes used in the production of synthetic oils from coal are noted, and the Fischer-Tropsch process is described in some detail.  Olefins provide suitable raw material for lubricating oil manufacture.  The catalysts and operations employed in the polymerization of olefins are noted, and the properties of the lubricants so obtained are enumerated.  Details of the hydrogenation process, suggested as the most promising refinery treatment, are presented also.
