An investigation was made of the different structures of quenched and tempered steels, grouped under the terms martensite and troostite.  The facts recorded indicate that martensite, like austenite, is a solid solution of carbide in a transitory form of Fe intermediate between γ-Fe and a-Fe of strong twining tendency.  A series of photomicrographs (mostly X 850) accompanies the paper.
