Catalysts made by the proper fusion and partial reduction with H2 of Co oxide effectively catalyze the water gas reaction to equilibrium at temperatures as low as 283° and space velocities of 1,800 vol. of water gas per vol. of catalyst per hr.  Adding suitable promoters, such as Fe up to 3% or Cr oxide, suppressed the simultaneous formation of CH4.  A Co catalyst containing 38% Cu was particularly active as a water-gas catalyst without significant synthesis of CH4.
