Relation A=CoccE between the activity A and the energy of activation E for contact catalytic reactions cannot be due entirely to a probability distribution of active centers.  2 other factors enter:  (1) the frequency of energy exchange in the adsorbed phase may be reduced by adsorption, so that it becomes a function of the spacing of the catalyst atoms; (2) in reactions of low activation, energies involving H quantum leakage through the energy barrier may be considerable.  The 1st hypothesis is supported by evidence, but there is none either for or against the 2d.  Further experiments are suggested.
