Catalyst (60:35.6:4.4=Cu:ZnO:Cr2O3) is highly active for 1:2 CO:H2 mixtures at 192°-230° per 100 atm.  At high rates of flow and at 200°-300° the ZnO undergoes reduction, yielding Cr2O3 impregnated with brass; the condensate contains little MeOH, the yields of which rise with diminishing rates of flow.  The results suggest that a higher Cu content is indicated, in order to prevent local overheating of the catalyst, with its consequent inactivation.
